If it doesn’t exist, your earning won’t either

I’m very happy making the few dollars I make everyday from the Internet, but just like everyone else I would like more.

After joining digital point forums, I found an abundance of people easily making tens if not hundreds of dollars a day from their websites.  What’s their secret? How do they do it? What are they doing different from me?

Well, I think I just found out what my problem is.  It’s that I just have too little content to offer.  Most of my websites are only 10 or 20 pages at the most.

For a long time I’ve been wondering why I couldn’t make the big bucks like those on the forum, and I finally realized that I don’t have enough pages.  If I don’t have alot of pages, I don’t have alot of ads.

The purpose of a business is to make money.  The purpose of blogging for money or creating websites for money is to make money, no matter how you do it.  So I need to get making more money by making more pages.

Think of it this way, I have a percentage chance of someone clicking on an ad on one of my pages no matter how small.  But if I don’t have a page, I have a 0% chance.

In conclusion, I’m making more webpages.

What a Difference Adsense Filtering Makes

adsense chartI finally started filtering out Adsense arbitrage sites and I can already see a dramatic difference in my earnings. Ads that have been consistently earning only one or three pennies per click have shot up significantly.

When I first scanned my site I was really shocked to see how many arbitrage ads really were on the website. My surprise soon turned to anger and now I’m devoted to weeding out any of the evil websites at all costs. How dare they steal my honest and heard-earned revenue!

To see for yourself who’s paying you those one or two cent clicks that you’ve been wondering about, you’ll have to use the Adsense Preview Tool given by Google which only works in Internet Explorer.

How to scan your website for cheap ads and arbitrage links:

1. Download the Adsense Preview Tool here at Google.

2. Double click on the saved file and hit “Yes”.

3. Re-start Internet Explorer and you’re good to go.

Once you have the preview tool installed, right-click anywhere on a web page and the ads available for display will pop up in a window where you can click on them to examine their destination. If you find an unwanted site, click the checkbox next to it and hit the “show urls” button to get a list of the sites that you want to block. Once you have that, you’ll want to put it in your Adsense competitor filter list.

How to filter Adsense ads:

1. Login to Adsense and select the “Adsense Setup” tab.

2. At the top select “Competitive Ad Filter”.

3. Enter your urls to be blocked into the dialog box.

4. Hit “Save Changes”.

Be careful when you block sites that you put them in the correct format as explained on the filter list by Google, as you may block a whole site that may pay you good money in another category other than the one you scanned.

A big downside to this is that filtering is limited only to 200 websites. However, it is well worth taking the small amount of time to do this and dramatically improve your amount of money earned per click.

The Limits of Content Niches

A problem that I have not been able to tackle is my desire to post wild and totally off-topic posts in my different blogs.

Whenever I think of a post topic, I then think, “Gee, that would be alot better if that topic was related to its very own website instead of just a single post”. Or, I think, “Is it even worth just one measly post on my site, when someone could just make a whole website about it and out-compete my single post entirely”.

For example, I would like to throw around the idea or begin to start my very own web comic. But where is the best place to place a new web comic? The people that are visiting my sites now aren’t looking for a web comic at all, and so they would be uninterested. However if I were to buy some kind of domain with webcomic in it then they would specifically be looking for a comic and have a higher chance of liking it.

So when I get a new idea, I buy an entirely new website domain. But being that I have so many ideas, I keep buying new domain names without being able to develop any content on them and move on to my next newest subject. Dammit.

I even purposefully make websites that are meant to be various topic based but I still can’t bring myself to post the content there.

Basically what I’m trying to say is that I’m frustrated that everytime I get a new idea for a website or post I always feel like I have to buy a new domain name to make it successful. Which may be right anyways.

Same Old PSA Ads

Did you ever notice that Google hasn’t updated their public service ads in over 2 years, pretty much since Adsense started? I mean, they still all mention Hurricane Katrina, so they’ve been displaying the same ad for over two years now.

I can understand that they still want to give to the Katrina fund foundation but the text that goes with it is very outdated, displaying something like “Help rushing aides for Hurricane Katrina”. Well it’s been over two years, I don’t think the aides are rushing anymore.

The other very outdated saying is: “Help support health clinics providing critical aid to evacuees”. I don’t think there are any evacuees anymore, in fact I think that they are just beginning the long process of rebuilding in the area.

I wonder what the new Google PSA ads will be when they roll around. Maybe the impeach Bush fund?

Who Will Get Your Websites When You Die?

Have you ever thought about who will get your websites when you die? I usually don’t even think about as far as next week let alone after my death. This thought occurred to me while I was writing my recent post about the question where will your content be in ten years, and I started to look even further.

I think, perhaps, by that time, if you’re websites are still popular and being visited after 50, 60, or 70 years then it would definitely be something to keep in the family. That being the case, the question then remains whether or not your children want to continue your work or even have the know-how to do it. But let’s not doubt them so quickly, it may in be us that won’t know how to use the technology of the future, I mean how many old people do you know run websites by themselves and keep up with today’s trends? No joke though, not very many. So that may be us in a couple of decades, but I hope it’s not.

Regardless, will they want to continue to work on the site to generate fresh content? What kind of site is it, your personal blog? But you’ve died, there is no more of your story, unless your children or grandchildren would like to write something about you everyday, which would would just seem a bit strange and a hassle. How would you like to keep writing about your deceased uncle everyday for the rest of your life? It’s ridiculous, out of the question. So your blog ends. With no new content, it will be buried forever. Like you.

Phew. Haha did you like how I pulled that last sentence off? Yeah it’s kind of depressing but after examining cadavers in pre-med I started to think alot about life and things worth doing. Sadly right now blogging, amateur website making doesn’t seem worth it with the little time we have.

But at any rate it’s something to think about, since your investing so much time in webmastering why do it if it won’t be around long anyhow.

Can You Invest in the Internet?

To all those of you blogging and content generating in hopes of gaining a profit on the Internet, let me ask you the most important question pertaining to your goal:

Where do you see your site’s content in 10 years?

No, really though, where’s it gonna be? Do you think your keyword-targeted content will still be in the third place spot on the first page of Google search?

Let’s take a look at some facts about how we understand the Internet so far:

1. Search Engines Rule - The number one way people find new and old content online is by search engines. At least up until now there is no other alternative that even comes close to matching the amount of traffic search engines bring a site other than offline advertising like magazine and tv commercials.

2. Dot Com Domain Names Dominate - Although at the moment dot com domains may not be any stronger than dot net or dot org in search results, dot com domains are desirable for their type-in traffic and real estate value alone. Every word in the english dictionary has been bought with a dot com, and are selling averaging thousands of dollars for the name alone because of the potential traffic and customers a developed site could make with it in the future.

3. Continuous New Content - The number of pages created everyday on the Internet go well beyond 7 million, which is the 2003 estimate. This means competition for your pages is growing non-stop every minute of every hour of everyday.

How can your content last 10 years?

The sad truth of it is, it may not be possible. The post you wrote on your blog last night will be apart of the invisible Internet, existing but never seeing the light of day for eternity. It seems that news sites have a very good chance of keeping their old content viewable to the public, since they can keep their audience and viewer base by reporting on current events. Sites that display facts, or purely informational sites about a specific topic will be rampant with so much competition that only the best will beat out the rest and be displayed in the first number of results.

What is the order of the demise?

1. Good Domain Name Keywords claimed (Done)

2. Webmasters look for Alternative Keywords (Where we are now)

3. All Profitable (no matter how small) Keyword Domains taken (Future)

4. With all domains taken, comes the Era of Development and Content Generation (Future)

5. Alternative Keyword domains become as competitive as Good Keyword domains in search results (Future)

6. Only good keyword domains and successful alternative keyword domains remain in search results (Future)

What does it all mean?

Basically, what this means is, if you are making money off your glow stick website and feel very comfortable about staying in the top search results because it is a uncommon or unusual keyword, later on there will be thousands of competing websites competing for your same keyword so you better make yours good if you want to stand a chance in the future.

Is there still a chance? (Chance ga aru?)

We are actually pretty lucky because even though we may feel that we missed out on the keyword era we still have the opportunity to plant ourselves into the Internet and have strong and deep roots where we cannot be buried out by new competition easily.

This look into the future is seen through a blogger’s perspective who generates income from their websites by advertising.

Time To Buy YUM

YUM! is the owner of Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, and A&W Root Beer.  The stock performed well last market report and is currently trading around its market high for a year.  Around 60% of revenue for the company last quarter can be accounted for by international revenue, and with the booming economy of China, that number is looking to grow.  China is the number one growth market for YUM! brands right now.  I just bought 135 shares of the stock today.  Make sure you buy a few shares before it’s too late.

Very Funny Animated GIFs

While scouring youtube I came across this clip of really funny animated gifs. I like the references in there, such as the ones of David Bowie in Labyrinth and Madness Our House. Enjoy!
