There has been some commotion in the Internet world recently about the September issue of Vogue Magazine. Specifically, 727 out of the 850 pages contained nothing but ads. This doesn’t come as a surprise to me because a fashion magazine like Vogue can get away with putting that many ads in their issues, after all fashion is fashion whether they’re ads or not. In fact, ads are usually the most attractive and interesting pages in a magazine and they’re expected to be.
Ads on websites, on the other hand, are a different matter entirely. When people visit a website they’re not looking for the ads, only content. This makes a site with heavy ad placement an eyesore and a nuisance among the web community. John Chow is one of those websites. His site has gone from an honest blog to a fully-fledged 13% content Vogue magazine. Blogs like his gain big profits from the ads at first, but with the lack of content comes the loss of readers. I admit I have websites that are ad-blown and void of content, but these sites don’t promise content or have to please a fan base. For repeat readers, keep your ad ratio far apart from Vogue’s standards and keep the content.
