How To Disable Your Facebook Public Search Profile

Facebook is opening up to the rest of the world and making their profiles public search listings, allowing Google and search engines to index user profiles. There have actually been some people that say this is a good thing and that it empowers users to portray themselves the way they want to be seen when their name is Googled. I say bullshit.

It’s a great move for Facebook because they’ll gain an enormous amount of search engine traffic, most likely coming up as the first result in name searches. It’s a bad thing for Facebook users however because it strips them of their ever-shrinking privacy. Fortunately we have the option now to disable our profile from being publicly listed, but who knows what will happen later on down the road.

How to Disable Your Facebook Public Search Profile:

1. Click “privacy” in the top right corner of your profile home page.

2. Under “privacy overview“, click “Search“.

3. Uncheck the “Allow anyone to see my public search listing” and “Allow my public search listing to be indexed by external search engines” boxes.

4. Don’t forget to hit Save!

Opening Facebook up to the public has taken them yet another step closer to imitating their social network rival MySpace. With the recent addition of Facebook apps, the site is now able to emulate any type of profile feature displayed on MySpace. Facebook is looked up upon by many as a classier and more sophisticated MySpace but with the way things are going it looks like that’s all going to change in the near future.

Regardless, there should one thing kept in mind regarding Internet privacy:
You have nothing to gain and everything to lose.
